The film is a mix of Dutch and English and for you all translated into English. --Reporter: Primary school De Kern started with English for all pupils from group 1 this year. Every week at least one hour is spent on English. In doing so, the school hopes to prepare the pupils well for -Teacher: We want to prepare them for the future and the future is that more and more English is given and asked for everywhere. at secondary school, at college and at university. So to start as early as group 1, you do that in a playful way and prepare them for a good future. --Reporter: Is it unique to Ede that this is done? --Teacher: It is taught at our school and there is another school in Ede where English is taught. --All the pupils together: Father Jacob, are you sleeping, are you sleeping, all the bells are ringing, bim bam bom. --Teacher: You've just heard the only thing and you've noticed that they pick up things incredibly quickly. What we do is just integrate the current Dutch themes with English words and songs and verses and ... They really do pick up a lot. --Reporter: Can you tell me your name? --Friso: Friso --Reporter: And your name? --Chloƫ: Chloe --Reporter: How do you spell that? --Chloe: Yes --Reporter: What is your favorite animal? --Friso: A tiger. --Chloƫ, Amira and Stefano count from one to ten-- --Reporter: What are the parents' reactions? -Teacher: Generally, they are very positive, the parents tell us: 'They are in the back of the car with us and then they say "have you learned this already? Yes, they really learn a lot of words. --Reporter: English lessons for group 1 are different from those for the oldest pupils of primary school. Learning young children is much more playful. -Teacher: Here it is much more singing songs, with games and objects. You give them an assignment and they carry it out. In the higher groups, you eventually move more towards conversational English and talking to each other, and of course the writing component is included. That will really not come up in a kindergarten group. --Reporter: How are you prepared for that as a teacher? -Teacher: We are all following a training at the moment, the teachers of group 1-4 get a training and those of the groups 5-8 get a training, so that we all get a good base of English and you get all tips and tools to work well with the children. I think that if the pupils have had English from group 1 and they eventually leave group 8, the level will be higher, many times higher than it is now. Because you are much more focused, already from group 1. --Reporter: Are you going to evaluate that? --Teacher: Of course, everything is evaluated, so this too.
